At Swift Educare, we understand how important IELTS is for students and professionals who aim to pursue their dreams abroad. Here’s everything you need to know about the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is one of the most trusted and respected English proficiency tests around the world…

What is IELTS?

IELTS is an internationally recognized English language proficiency test. Designed for non-native English speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.

There are two types of IELTS exam:

  • Academic – suitable for individuals applying to study at higher education institutions or professional registrars.
  • General Training – ideal for those planning to move to an English-speaking country or seeking work experience abroad.

The exam can be taken on paper or on a computer. It depends on the needs of the test taker. Results are valid for two years from the date of testing.

Test Format

The IELTS test is divided into four sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking, although the listening and speaking sections are similar for both the Academic and General Training tests. But the reading and writing sections will vary depending on the type of test you choose…

Listening

  • Format: 4 sections (40 questions)
  • Duration: 30 minutes + 10 minutes to transfer answers

Reading

  • Format: 3 passages (40 questions)
  • Duration: 60 minutes (no extra time for answer transfer)

Writing

  • Format: 2 tasks (letter/report and essay writing)

Speaking

  • Format: 3 parts (introduction, discussion, and detailed conversation)
  • Duration: 11–14 minutes
